Aztec Launches One of Ethereum’s Few Fully Decentralized L2
Aztec has launched its Ignition mainnet, positioning itself as one of the few fully decentralized Ethereum layer-2 networks. The mainnet is a functional consensus-producing chain that generates blocks but lacks a smart contract execution layer. Aztec and Facet v1 are among the few systems that operate without centralized elements, as ownership of the rollup contract was renounced. For the next 12 months, the Aztec Foundation, core team, and investors cannot run nodes, stake, or participate in governance, marking it as the first community-launched L2 in Ethereum's history. Staking is also available for holders, allowing them to earn block rewards, with early participants benefiting from reduced competition for those rewards. The ongoing token sale, targeting community whitelisted members, has already raised $2.77 million. A total of 1.547 billion AZTEC tokens will be sold, reflecting a discount of 75% from previous valuations. These tokens will be locked for a minimum of 90 days, contributing to liquidity on secondary markets. The project anticipates considerable interest as it progresses.
