Bhutan Integrates National ID System on Ethereum
The Kingdom of Bhutan has migrated its national ID system to Ethereum, moving from Polygon to improve the verification of identities for its approximately 800,000 citizens. This integration allows residents to access government services more securely. The Ethereum integration has been completed, with the full migration of all resident credentials expected to conclude by early 2026. Aya Miyaguchi, President of the Ethereum Foundation, highlighted this achievement as a significant step for Bhutan and a leap towards a more open digital future. Bhutan's blockchain identity system is its third iteration, following its previous systems which operated on Polygon and Hyperledger Indy. Additionally, Bhutan has emerged as a major holder of Bitcoin, leveraging its renewable energy sources for mining, holding 11,286 Bitcoin valued at approximately $1.31 billion, making it the fifth-largest Bitcoin-holding nation.
