The app operates without internet access by utilizing Bluetooth mesh networking, allowing users to communicate directly even when traditional networks fail. It enables users to pin messages to specific locations to inform others about dangerous areas or available shelters. Developer Calle noted that this spike in downloads reflects the app's design, which aims to maintain communication during natural disasters. Similar patterns were seen recently during protests in Nepal and civil unrest in Côte d'Ivoire, demonstrating Bitchat's growing role as a vital communication tool in crises.
