Bitchat Tops Jamaica App Charts as Hurricane Melissa Cuts Connectivity

Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app, surged in popularity in Jamaica during Hurricane Melissa, which severely disrupted telecommunications on the island. As national connectivity dropped to about 30% due to heavy winds and infrastructure damage, Bitchat became the top-ranked app in Jamaica’s social networking category. The app operates without internet access by utilizing Bluetooth mesh networking, allowing users to communicate directly even when traditional networks fail. It enables users to pin messages to specific locations to inform others about dangerous areas or available shelters. Developer Calle noted that this spike in downloads reflects the app's design, which aims to maintain communication during natural disasters. Similar patterns were seen recently during protests in Nepal and civil unrest in Côte d'Ivoire, demonstrating Bitchat's growing role as a vital communication tool in crises.
