British Duo On Trial for Planning to Steal $23m in Crypto—From Behind Bars
Two men from Scotland, Robert Barr and Barry Letham, are facing trial in Glasgow for allegedly plotting to steal nearly $23 million in cryptocurrency through a series of robberies. The duo is accused of conspiring with unknown collaborators between March and June 2024, with parts of the planning occurring while one of them was in prison. They allegedly targeted addresses of individuals known to hold significant amounts of cryptocurrency, and were involved in a previous robbery where they stole a cryptocurrency wallet, jewelry, and other items. Both men have pleaded not guilty, and their trial is scheduled for September 2026. The rise of such criminal activities coincides with an increase in reported wrench attacks on cryptocurrency holders, where victims are threatened for their assets. Experts indicate that the frequency of these attacks is growing, particularly where self-custody of cryptocurrencies is common. They advise users to keep low profiles about their holdings to mitigate risks.
