Cardano Network Disrupted by 'Poisoned' Transaction Attack
Cardano's blockchain split into two ledgers after a malformed transaction caused a validation flaw, triggering a chain split. A user apologized for the incident, claiming negligence while attempting to reproduce a bad transaction that passed validation on newer node versions but was rejected by older ones. The defect exploited a software bug, leading to one chain with the 'poisoned' transaction and another without it. No user funds were lost due to this incident. Intersect, Cardano's governance organization, advised operators to upgrade their software to reconnect with the main chain. The involved wallet was identified, and the event raised concerns of a possible cyberattack, prompting the involvement of authorities for further investigation. Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson described the incident as a planned attack from a disgruntled stakeholder and mentioned that while issues arose, the network itself remained operational throughout.
