Citi Plans 2026 Crypto Custody Launch
Citi is set to offer crypto custody services in 2026, enabling it to hold digital assets like bitcoin and ether for clients. The development of this custody solution has spanned the last two to three years, according to Biswarup Chatterjee, Citi's global head of partnerships and innovation. The bank is exploring both internally developed solutions and third-party partnerships to support the offering. Additionally, Citi is considering issuing its own stablecoin, though tokenized deposits remain a current focus. This new custody service will provide institutional investors with a regulated solution to securely store their cryptocurrency holdings, a crucial step for gaining exposure to the digital asset space. The initiative positions Citi among a small group of traditional financial institutions expanding into cryptocurrency services, complementing other digital asset projects the bank has been involved in recently.
