Developer of Bitcoin App Samourai Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison
Keonne Rodriguez, the developer of the Samourai Wallet app, was sentenced to five years in prison for operating an unlicensed money transmitter. Alongside the prison time, he was also fined $250,000. The sentencing occurred after Rodriguez's involvement in creating a Bitcoin mixer app that obscured users' transactions by mixing them with others, making it easier for them to hide the movements of their Bitcoin. U.S. authorities had previously shut down the platform and arrested Rodriguez and fellow developer William Lonergan Hill, accusing them of ignoring its use by criminals. Hill is scheduled to be sentenced later this month on November 19, 2025.
