Developer of Bitcoin App Samourai Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Keonne Rodriguez, developer of the Samourai Wallet app, has been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitter. Rodriguez was also fined $250,000 and is required to surrender for his prison term on December 19. The Samourai Wallet provided users the ability to obscure their Bitcoin transactions by mixing them with those of other users, which authorities alleged facilitated criminal activities. Last year, U.S. authorities shut down the platform and arrested Rodriguez alongside William Lonergan Hill, accusing them of ignoring the misuse of their service by criminals. Hill is scheduled for sentencing on November 19.
