Former Australian Rugby Star Arrested Over Alleged Crypto Theft
Former Rugby League star Trent Merrin was arrested and charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception, following an alleged theft of $91,000 (AUD $140,000) in cryptocurrency. The arrest came after a year-long police investigation into unauthorized crypto transfers from a victim's account. Officers raided Merrin's home in Barrack Point, seizing electronic devices for forensic examination to aid their inquiry. Merrin, known for playing with the St George Illawarra Dragons, Penrith Panthers, and Leeds Rhinos, had pursued business ventures in the crypto and wellness sectors after retiring in 2021. He was granted conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in court on December 3. This incident coincides with heightened regulatory scrutiny on cryptocurrency crimes in Australia, as authorities ramp up enforcement against digital currency-related offenses.
