Former Australian Rugby Star Arrested Over Alleged Crypto Theft

Former Rugby League star Trent Merrin has been arrested and charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception related to an alleged theft of $91,000 (AUD $140,000) in cryptocurrency. The police conducted a raid on Merrin's home at Barrack Point, seizing electronic devices for forensic examination after a year-long investigation. Authorities claim Merrin used deceptive means to transfer funds from a victim's account. The former Kangaroos and New South Wales Blues representative was taken into custody on Tuesday and granted conditional bail, with a court appearance scheduled for December 3. Merrin, who retired in 2021, has pursued business ventures in the crypto and wellness sectors, actively investing and building businesses since 2015. This incident aligns with efforts by Australian regulators to strengthen enforcement against digital currency crimes.
