Google Maps Becomes Gemini’s Proving Ground for Real-World AI

Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Maps, offering conversational, hands-free navigation enriched with real-world awareness. Users can now receive landmark-based directions and proactive traffic alerts. Gemini allows drivers to execute multi-step tasks via voice commands, such as locating budget-friendly vegan restaurants on a route or finding nearby parking. It also provides proactive notifications about road disruptions, like closures or traffic jams, improving the driving experience. Navigation instructions have been updated to reference recognizable landmarks, drawn from an extensive database of 250 million mapped locations and Street View imagery. Additionally, the new ‘Lens built with Gemini’ feature enables users to use their phone cameras to identify and inquire about nearby places immediately after their arrival. This feature is set to launch in the U.S. for both Android and iOS devices.
