Harvard Endowment Takes Rare Leap Into Bitcoin With $443M Bet on BlackRock's IBIT
Harvard University's endowment has made a notable investment of $443 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), marking it as the fund's largest known equity position. This investment constitutes over 20% of Harvard's reported U.S.-listed public equity holdings, a significant move as institutional investors generally avoid exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in favor of private equity and real estate. The disclosure, made in Harvard's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, indicates the endowment held 6.8 million shares of IBIT as of the third quarter of 2025. Although this investment represents less than 1% of Harvard's total endowment, which exceeds $55 billion, it places the institution among the top 20 holders of the fund. The decision to invest comes at a time when Bitcoin's price has recently dropped over 5%, with IBIT being the largest spot bitcoin ETF globally, boasting nearly $75 billion in net assets.
