Harvard Endowment Takes Rare Leap Into Bitcoin With $443M Bet on BlackRock's IBIT

Harvard University’s endowment has invested $443 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), marking a significant move as institutional investors typically shy away from ETFs, preferring private equity and real estate. The investment represents 20% of Harvard's reported U.S.-listed public equity holdings, making it the largest known equity position in the trust to date. This disclosure, made through a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, reveals that the endowment holds 6.8 million shares of IBIT as of Q3 2025. Although this investment constitutes less than 1% of Harvard's total $55 billion endowment, it places the university among the top 20 holders of IBIT. The timing is notable as Bitcoin's price recently fell over 5%, trading around $96,000, despite IBIT being the world’s largest spot bitcoin ETF, boasting nearly $75 billion in net assets.
