Harvard Endowment Takes Rare Leap Into Bitcoin With $443M Bet on BlackRock's IBIT
Harvard University's endowment has disclosed a significant investment of $443 million in BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), marking its largest known equity position. This stake accounts for over 20% of the endowment's reported holdings in U.S.-listed public equities. Typically, institutional investors tend to shy away from exchange-traded funds, preferring private equity and real estate. Despite a recent drop of over 5% in the price of bitcoin, IBIT still stands as the world's largest spot bitcoin ETF, boasting nearly $75 billion in net assets. The investment represents less than 1% of Harvard's total endowment, which exceeds $55 billion, but positions the university among the top 20 holders of the fund. This notable movement into bitcoin investments reflects a shift in strategy by traditional institutional investors during a time of volatile market conditions.
