Harvard Triples Its Bitcoin Position as Emory Expands BTC ETF Holdings

Harvard University and Emory University both increased their Bitcoin exposure in the third quarter through ETF holdings, according to recent filings. Harvard Management Company reported holding 6.8 million shares of BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, valued at approximately $443 million, a significant rise from 1.9 million shares at the end of June. While this allocation is relatively small compared to Harvard’s $56.9 billion endowment, it indicates a shifting investment approach toward Bitcoin. Emory University also expanded its Bitcoin ETF investments, increasing its holdings to 1 million shares of the Bitcoin Mini Trust valued at about $52 million, along with a smaller position in iShares Bitcoin Trust shares. These movements occur amid increasing spot Bitcoin ETF outflows, which have seen substantial withdrawals. Despite the price volatility of Bitcoin, which recently dipped below $95,000, the endowment disclosures reflect a broader trend of universities embracing Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class for investment.
