Latin American Crypto Exchange Ripio Launches Argentine Peso Stablecoin 'wARS'
Ripio, a prominent Latin American crypto exchange with over 25 million users, has debuted a stablecoin called wARS, pegged to the Argentine peso. This new token, now operational on Ethereum, Coinbase’s Base, and World Chain, allows users to transact globally without needing banks or converting currencies to U.S. dollars. Ripio's initiative comes amidst a significant reduction in Argentina's inflation rate from 292% to 31.8% due to government actions. The wARS stablecoin is part of Ripio’s broader strategy to tokenize real-world assets, including earlier releases like a tokenized sovereign bond. Additionally, the company plans to develop similar stablecoins for other Latin American currencies, aiming to streamline cross-border payments within the region and provide alternatives to using U.S. dollars, which are currently necessary for most transactions. This move reflects a rising demand for stablecoins in countries with high inflation and strict currency controls, such as Argentina and Brazil.
