New Strike Force Set to Target Overseas 'Pig Butchering'
U.S. federal agencies are launching a Scam Center Strike Force to combat extensive crypto fraud operations, particularly targeting Southeast Asian 'pig butchering' scams. The initiative was announced alongside sanctions against Burmese entities linked to these scams, which have reportedly drained billions from U.S. residents. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control has sanctioned several groups associated with the operations, stating that human trafficked individuals are often exploited to execute these fraud schemes. The newly formed strike force, led by the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, aims to dismantle these organized crime groups and protect American citizens from their schemes. Officials emphasized the need for a coordinated response from various federal agencies, noting that the scale of the scams is staggering and no single agency can tackle it alone. The crackdown comes following significant actions, including the recent seizure of over 127,000 bitcoin linked to such frauds.
