New York DFS chief Adrienne Harris to step down

Adrienne Harris will step down as Superintendent of New York's Department of Financial Services (DFS) after four years, with Governor Kathy Hochul appointing Kaitlin Asrow as Acting Superintendent effective October 18, 2025. Harris, who was appointed in August 2021, played a significant role in enhancing consumer protections and regulatory frameworks, recovering over $725 million in restitution for New Yorkers. Under her leadership, DFS became a global leader in digital asset oversight, growing its Virtual Currency Unit and introducing regulations on artificial intelligence in the insurance sector. Asrow, formerly the Executive Deputy Superintendent of Research & Innovation, has been instrumental in policy related to fintech and digital assets. This leadership change signals a continued focus on innovation and consumer protection within New York’s financial regulatory landscape.
