Nobel Peace Prize Bets on Polymarket Under Scrutiny

Norwegian officials have launched an investigation into betting activity related to the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, María Corina Machado, on the prediction platform Polymarket. This inquiry was prompted by reports that bets surged shortly before the announcement of Machado as the recipient of the prize. Norwegian Nobel Institute director, Kristian Berg Harpviken, indicated they are investigating potential espionage, questioning whether someone obtained insider information that led to significant profits. One user reportedly earned over $30,000 from $70,000 in bets on Machado, while three accounts collectively profited by approximately $90,000. Machado was recognized for her advocacy for democracy in Venezuela, notably highlighting Bitcoin during the country's hyperinflation crisis as a means for residents to secure their wealth. Polymarket, which has become popular for various prediction markets, also faced increased scrutiny after mentions in the media and a recent CFTC appeal allowing it to offer event contracts in the U.S. Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan expressed confidence in the platform’s future following regulatory developments.
