OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.1, Making ChatGPT Smarter, Faster, and More 'Conversational'

OpenAI has launched GPT-5.1, an updated version of its language model designed to enhance ChatGPT's interactivity and performance. The new update introduces two primary models: GPT-5.1 Instant and GPT-5.1 Thinking, aimed at improving the conversational experience and efficiency. GPT-5.1 Instant is intended to be warmer and more conversational, capable of adaptive reasoning to assess question complexity before providing responses. This feature has shown improvements in evaluating tasks like math and coding. On the other hand, GPT-5.1 Thinking focuses on delivering clearer and more efficient responses by adapting processing time based on query complexity. OpenAI also announced the introduction of new user customization options for personality and tone, allowing users to select styles such as Professional or Quirky. The rollout will initially be available to paid subscribers before expanding to free users. An API integration for developers is planned to follow shortly after the release.
