Ripple Weighs Staking Overhaul to Expand XRP’s Role in DeFi

Ripple is considering enabling native staking on the XRP Ledger to enhance its security and utility. J. Ayo Akinyele from RippleX emphasized the need for a source of staking rewards and a fair distribution mechanism. He noted that specific restructuring would be necessary at the core level to facilitate staking without compromising the ledger’s original consensus model. Current CTO David Schwartz proposed two conceptual models: a dual-layer validator system and a structure utilizing fees for zero-knowledge proofs. Although these ideas are technically feasible, they remain complex and risky to implement, making staking's introduction to XRP unlikely in the near future. Ripple aims to integrate staking as a means to encourage long-term participation among validators and token holders while preserving the blockchain's integrity. XRP is currently valued at $2.13, reflecting a minor increase over the past 24 hours.
