Ripple’s RLUSD to Power Mastercard Credit Card Settlements on XRP Ledger

Ripple, Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini are piloting the use of the RLUSD stablecoin for settling credit card transactions on the XRP Ledger, announced at Ripple's Swell 2025 event. This initiative seeks to demonstrate how regulated stablecoins can enhance traditional financial systems while maintaining compliance. With over $1 billion in RLUSD circulation and regulation under New York’s Trust Charter, the pilot aims to enable swift, compliant card payment settlements. WebBank, which issues the Gemini Credit Card, will explore settling Mastercard transactions with RLUSD. The anticipated outcome is to reduce settlement times from days to near-instant transfers, particularly for cross-border payments. If successful, this project could serve as a model for other financial institutions looking to adopt blockchain-based solutions. The collaboration integrates Mastercard's broader efforts to incorporate regulated digital assets into its payment infrastructure, following a previous partnership with Gemini on a special XRP edition of their credit card.
