Ripple’s RLUSD to Power Mastercard Credit Card Settlements on XRP Ledger
Ripple is collaborating with Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini to pilot the use of its RLUSD stablecoin for swift settlements of fiat credit card transactions on the XRP Ledger. Announced during Ripple’s Swell 2025 event, this initiative may mark a significant advancement as it explores how regulated stablecoins can improve traditional financial systems while ensuring compliance and safety. With RLUSD already surpassing $1 billion in circulation and regulated under New York’s Trust Charter, the pilot aims to integrate blockchain’s efficiency into the credit card payment flow familiar to consumers. WebBank, which issues the Gemini Credit Card, will test settling Mastercard transactions with RLUSD. This project represents a potential shift away from the slower, costlier settlement processes banks currently employ. Pending regulatory approvals, the onboarding process for RLUSD onto the XRP Ledger will commence in the coming months. If successful, this model could pave the way for other card programs to adopt blockchain-based settlements.
