Ripple’s RLUSD to Power Mastercard Credit Card Settlements on XRP Ledger
Ripple is partnering with Mastercard, WebBank, and Gemini to pilot the use of its RLUSD stablecoin for settling fiat credit card transactions on the XRP Ledger. This initiative, announced at Ripple’s Swell 2025 event, aims to demonstrate how regulated stablecoins like RLUSD can enhance traditional financial systems while maintaining compliance. RLUSD, which is backed by cash and cash equivalents, has surpassed $1 billion in circulation and is regulated under New York’s Trust Charter. The pilot project, pending regulatory approval, will involve WebBank testing RLUSD settlements for Mastercard transactions on the XRP Ledger. If successful, it could revolutionize payment processing, allowing for nearly instant fund transfers compared to the standard one to three days for traditional systems. This project aligns with Mastercard's efforts to integrate digital assets into its operations. Ripple's president emphasized the goal to bring blockchain efficiency to familiar credit card transaction experiences.
