Sam Bankman-Fried Wants Another Trial, But His Lawyer Faces Skepticism
Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX, is seeking to overturn his 25-year prison sentence following his conviction for fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy. During a recent appeals court hearing, judges expressed skepticism toward the arguments presented by his attorney, Alexandra Shapiro, who claimed that Bankman-Fried was restricted in his ability to discuss legal advice and argued that jurors were misled about customer losses. The judges pointed out that Bankman-Fried himself stated he did not rely on legal advice when misappropriating funds. Additionally, they emphasized that the potential for victims to be reimbursed does not constitute a legal defense for financial crimes. The panel's ruling will be issued at a later date, as they scrutinize the appeal under consideration.
