Square announces Bitcoin payments for merchants

Square, the payment services arm of Block, has introduced integrated Bitcoin payments and an AI-powered voice ordering system for merchants. This update allows business owners to accept Bitcoin directly through Square’s platform, eliminating the need for third-party processors. The new feature leverages the Lightning Network for faster and cheaper transactions, enabling merchants to settle in Bitcoin or convert proceeds to fiat currency instantly. The AI voice ordering system facilitates customer interactions, allowing businesses to manage orders using natural language prompts tailored to their unique menus or product catalogs. This move is part of Square’s broader strategy to enhance Bitcoin utility across its offerings and to stay competitive with fintech rivals like PayPal and Shopify. The new tools are currently available for U.S. merchants, with international support anticipated in 2026.
