Tenerife Council to Sell Bitcoin Bought In 2012 After Near 10,000% Price Rise

The Tenerife Council is set to sell 97 bitcoin purchased for €10,000 (around $11,500) in 2012 as part of a research initiative by the Instituto Tecnológico y de Energías Renovables (ITER). The value of this investment has nearly reached €10 million after a significant rise in bitcoin's price. The initiative aimed to study blockchain technology rather than generate profit. Selling the cryptocurrency has proved challenging, with previous attempts rejected by banks; hence, ITER is negotiating with a regulated Spanish financial entity to facilitate the sale. The proceeds will support new research projects at ITER, including advancements in quantum technology, as stated by Juan José Martínez, Tenerife’s innovation councillor.
