Thai regulators raid World iris scanning site in latest headache for Sam Altman
Thailand’s SEC has raided an iris scanning location operated by World, the digital identity project co-founded by Sam Altman, due to unlicensed operations of its WLD token. The raid was part of a joint effort with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) and was aimed at addressing alleged breaches of local digital asset laws. Authorities arrested suspects linked to the operation, which claimed to legalize its token distribution only in areas where permits exist. World operates 102 orb locations in Thailand for iris scanning involved in the verification process for eligibility for WLD tokens, which are exchanged for personal identification. The organization stated that distribution is geographically and demographically restricted, and they are not responsible for the token's presence on external exchanges. This incident adds to the challenges faced by Altman's project as it navigates regulatory scrutiny in various regions.
