The claim that L2s inherit ETH security is erroneous — Solana co-founder
Anatoly Yakovenko, co-founder of Solana, expressed skepticism about the security and decentralization of Ethereum's layer-2 (L2) networks in a recent debate. He pointed out that these networks have significant security vulnerabilities, including a large attack surface and extensive codebases that are difficult to audit for bugs. According to Yakovenko, funds on L2s can be moved without users' approval, leading to potential risks. He strongly argued that the assertion that L2s inherit security from Ethereum is incorrect, stating that systems like wormhole ETH on Solana carry similar worst-case risks as Ethereum itself and generate comparable revenue for Ethereum layer-1 stakers. While some in the industry view the growth of L2 networks as a positive sign of Ethereum's health, others, including Binance Research, caution that they may fragment liquidity and negatively impact revenue on the Ethereum base layer due to lower transaction fees.
