U.S. DOJ Pursues North Korea's Illicit Money Machine, Seizes More Crypto
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced new criminal convictions and crypto seizures in its efforts targeting North Korean operations. Recently, authorities seized $15 million in USDT, linked to cyber heists associated with the group Advanced Persistent Threat 38, reportedly connected to the North Korean military. Additionally, five guilty pleas were announced regarding individuals who aided North Korean entities in securing false U.S. technology jobs and identities. The FBI's counterintelligence division emphasized the ongoing threat posed by North Korea’s attempts to evade sanctions and generate funds to sustain its regime. Authorities are also seizing crypto assets globally, and there are inquiries about how these confiscated funds may relate to plans for U.S. crypto reserves. Former President Trump's administration aimed to establish a bitcoin strategic reserve for funds obtained during forfeitures, but congressional action may be needed to formalize these plans.
