US energy sec floats faster grid access for AI and crypto miners
The US Secretary of Energy has called on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to establish new rules to expedite the connection process for large energy consumers such as AI data centers and Bitcoin mining operations. In a recent letter, Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized the need for faster and standardized procedures for these high-demand users to connect directly to the high-voltage transmission system, which supports larger loads compared to local power lines. The proposed regulations could significantly reduce review times for connection requests from years to just 60 days, contingent upon applicants agreeing to cover necessary network upgrades. This initiative recognizes the growing demand for electricity driven by increased electrification and emphasizes the importance of flexible energy demand from Bitcoin miners and data centers. These entities have been competing for sustainable and cost-effective energy sources, signaling potential for increased institutional investment in the coming years.
