Warner Music Moves From Litigation to Licensing With Udio
Warner Music Group has resolved its copyright infringement lawsuit against AI music generator Udio, announcing a transition to a licensed platform. This new model will allow users to create music with the voices and compositions of participating artists, set to launch in 2026. Udio will implement artist protections and ensure proper licensing, credits, and compensation for creators, replacing its previous model that allegedly used copyrighted content without permission. The lawsuit was initially filed by Warner, Sony Music, and UMG, accusing Udio and competitor Suno of mass copyright infringement by training AI models on unauthorized recordings. As part of the settlement, Udio will develop a subscription service where artists can opt-in and receive credit and payment for their work. This agreement underscores a growing trend in the music industry to adapt to the challenges posed by AI technology, providing an avenue for new revenue streams while protecting artists' rights.
