What Is Tempo? The Payments and Stablecoin Blockchain Built by Stripe

Tempo is a new layer-1 blockchain being developed by payments giant Stripe in collaboration with crypto venture firm Paradigm. It is specifically designed for payments and stablecoin use cases, boasting a target transaction speed of over 100,000 transactions per second (TPS) and low fees. The blockchain is currently in private testnet and has received design input from major companies including OpenAI, Shopify, and Visa. Unlike other blockchains that cater to a wide variety of activities, Tempo focuses exclusively on facilitating real-world payment use cases such as cross-border payments and remittances. Tempo will initially use independent validators from its design partners before transitioning to a full open and permissionless network. Notably, it offers an automated market maker (AMM) feature that allows users to pay transaction fees with various stablecoins. Additionally, Tempo incorporates opt-in privacy features to keep certain transaction data private while adhering to compliance standards. The project aims to enhance stablecoin transactions within the financial ecosystem as it progresses into wider use.
