What Is Tempo? The Payments and Stablecoin Blockchain Built by Stripe

Tempo is a new layer-1 blockchain developed by Stripe and Paradigm, focused on facilitating payments and stablecoins. Launched in private testnet, the blockchain is designed with contributions from major firms like OpenAI, Shopify, and Visa, promising low fees and high transaction speeds of around 100,000 transactions per second. It is tailored for real-world payment applications, including cross-border payments and remittances. In early development, Tempo employs independent validators and plans to transition to an open, permissionless structure. Unique features include the ability to use various stablecoins for transaction fees and opt-in privacy for certain transaction data. Stripe’s recent investment of $500 million values Tempo at $5 billion, positioning it for significant growth in the exploding stablecoin market, which now surpasses $300 billion with increasing institutional adoption.
