XRP Investor Says $3M in XRP Was Stolen; Cold Wallet Maker Says Seed Import Made Wallet Hot

Brandon LaRoque, a long-time XRP investor, reported a loss of over $3 million in XRP after checking his balance on the Ellipal mobile app on October 15. The theft, which occurred on October 12, involved two test transactions followed by a significant withdrawal of approximately 1.21 million XRP to a newly created wallet. He had been using Ellipal to store his investments, which were nearly all of his retirement savings planned for a new home in Las Vegas. Ellipal explained that entering a hardware wallet’s seed phrase into their app converts the wallet from cold to hot, thus compromising its security. LaRoque's issue was exacerbated by confusion regarding the app’s indicators, which displayed contradictory information about the wallet status on his devices. Despite reporting the incident to authorities, LaRoque acknowledged the slim chances of recovering his funds due to their transfer through various platforms and local exchanges. He shared his experience to warn others against similar mistakes in cryptocurrency management.
